A Personal Story
We get it. As parents we try to give our kids the best we can offer. Nutritious food, adequate exercise, chauffeur them to sports and school events, as well as a peaceful and loving home where we can be present with them. With all of this, you would think our kids would be thriving. However, despite our best efforts, sometimes they need something we cannot give them. Until now!
Hello, Drs. Troy and Dawn here to let you know that you are not alone. Let me give you an example, our youngest daughter, who is 7, has this habit of pulling out her hair (trichotillamania). All. The. Time. Car trips, watching movies, when she was bored…. We had to tell her 100 times a day “Get your hands out of your hair!”
We have tried it ALL. We found that nothing seemed to work fully. As parents who want the best for our kids (and were admittedly at the end of our ropes) we started doing our own in depth research and found that not only is trichotillamania encouraged by stress but many conditions that affect our children also are related to stress. Stress has been shown to directly impact focus and clarity, learning and memory, and cause nervous tension. I have seen these stressors in clinical practice over the last decade in children where stress from school, peers, home life, sports, etc. affect the kids health and performance.
With this new found information we found it imperative to offer what we call Calm for Kids.. After 2 weeks, we don't have to correct her all day and our sweet girl is now growing her hair!
This is just one example of how stress can affect children. We have an example with our son as well but we will share that another time. : ) (Share some other ideas that may show up in their child.)
